Matthew 10:7-8English Standard Version (ESV)

7 And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers,[a] cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay.

Not many of us will do anything for FREE, let alone the list above. We have become a people of pay as you go. We want ALL the credit and the recognition. We want to be paid for our services.

What Jesus is saying here is that you have received your “blessings” ( whatever they may be) and it didn’t cost you anything, so don’t start charging folks for the very thing you received for free.

Take a popular donation center who receives everything in its warehouse for FREE, but turns around and sells it for profit. Hmmmm, something to think about isn’t it. Yes, you are reselling at a reduced cost, often 1/8 of original cost but you paid nothing for it. Could you not give it away to someone who needs it? Do you have to “charge” people for everything you give?

The pay it forward initiative is a great one. Random acts of kindness have made its way all over the most popular news outlets. Why is this random? Shouldn’t it be the norm? Can’t we give without being made to feel guilty if we don’t? Do we need a guy with a sign to remind us that there are less fortunate people that need our help?

Have we forgotten God blessed us and charged us nothing in return?

Be good to people, be kind to people, give expecting nothing in return and watch God repay you.
